the clio's do have a few water based problems - has it got a sunroof? if so... has it leaked recently?

a further place for them to leak is somewhere near the wipers - some drain holes can get blocked with gunk and cause water to come into the cabin behind the dashboard - this might cause the dashboard to malfunction (on my gfs 99 clio one of the lights for the speedo has stopped working )

a replacement dial set is quite cheap off ebay and may be worth just swapping over - the only awkwared job is getting the dials out - lotsa screws!
