A lot of couriers do like to be awkward, as do customs! It's partially my line of work too Araf.

Unfortunately the couriers often get it wrong and if they don't have prior customs clearance instructions from the sender they'll sometimes process the consignment without consulting you (or try to do so whilst you're out of office) which can lead to complications. Once an inbound/outbound shipment has been processed it can't be undone.

Beg to differ on that one. Customs officers are civil servants. They will do whatever requested, within the constraints of the regulations. There are clear procedures documented for the reclaim of overpaid funds, or indeed for the payment of underdeclared amounts.

The main problem is getting a clearance agent to take the trouble to submit that paperwork - or getting sufficient information to submit it yourself.
