Just a suggestion but when changing rear belts at work for a recall, they have to be perfectly level in order for the belt to release, but they will retract.

We share the same stater there but the Clio is on its way out, yeah I've heard the stories of renaults faults but not had many myself other than the clutch going, turned out to be a bigger job than expected n trapped the crank sensor connector when putting the gear box back in, had it running...
